If you are reading this book as someone who uses cannabis you may have some people in your life who are telling you not to smoke or to cut down your smoking. It may be your partner, your boss, a parent or, if you’re really unlucky, all of the above. It may also be that there is a part of you that is thinking about changing your habits a bit. The techniques in this book are based on cognitive-behavioural methods. You may have come across this term in other areas when cognitive-behavioural therapy, or CBT, is discussed. These techniques briefly refer to the interaction between thoughts emotions and behaviours, along with added physical and physiological aspects. A cognitive therapist sees these aspects of the individual person as linked, with each one having an effect on the other three. As healthcare professionals (we are both Consultant Clinical Psychologists) it is not our job to examine the whys and wherefores about substances and in what form they should exist in society or culture, and this book will reflect that. We don’t see cannabis as a ‘good’ or ‘bad’ thing, just a thing, and for some people that thing can be problematic. What we would like to do in this book is help you to think about whether it is a problem for you and - if it is - to help you do something about it.
