Jesus has been warning people of judgment since the earliest days of his ministry. Even his first call to repent carries with it the promise of judgment. We do not like to hear about judgment, because it forces us to think about how we live in the present. We would much rather place judgment at a distance and delay whatever preparations we need to make. But what if judgment comes sooner than we think? And what if judgment takes place at multiple times and in multiple forms? These are the questions that the disciples face as they begin a discussion with Jesus on the beauty of the temple. Jesus has just shown them that a sacrificial gift by a poor widow is more impressive than all of the gifts of the rich added together. Like the disciples, We would rather focus on the beautiful things of this world. Even so, many people continue to suffer through war and disease and disaster. Jesus personalizes some of these events for the disciples by describing the coming siege of Jerusalem. Events become even more personal when they hear that they will face persecution and betrayal. Jesus' message is still relevant to us because our times fit the pattern of the world he described. Moreover, we are closer to the time of ultimate judgment than the people to whom these words were spoken. The warning Jesus gave to them applies equally to us: do not be so weighed down in this life that judgment comes suddenly upon you, like a trap.
