Complete beginner's guide to all aspects of modifying the classic Nintendo Game Boy.
Game Boy Modding teaches you how to purchase, refurbish, mod, and customize Nintendo handheld consoles. The consoles are widely available and the customizations are affordable, requiring only limited tools and know-how. Retro consoles are seeing a resurgence of popularity worldwide, and king among these throwback devices is the Nintendo Game Boy, which sold over 100 million units in its lifetime and introduced gamers to Mario and Pokemon. These consoles emanate pixelated 8-bit retro charm, but lack the modern technological enhancements that we take for granted in 2020. You'll learn basic soldering and hardware modification techniques; how to change speakers, buttons, and screen lenses; how to fix dead speakers and sticky buttons; and how to personalize your Game Boy to your heart's content.

Well-known in the international gaming and modding community, Greg Farrell is an experienced Game Boy modder and customizer who has built and sold hundreds of units. Greg has previously published two graphic novels and a book of lists. He has an active Instagram account dedicated to Game Boy modding with thousands of followers (@gamechanger_mods).
At Retro Modding, we have a special fondness for the Game Boy. Game Boy customization has been going on since the console existed, but a vibrant modding scene has exploded exponentially since the mid-2000s, thanks to the landmark work of the creative people fueling it. Back in 2004, Warstware released one of the earliest DMG backlight tutorials, which used little more than an LED, a CD case, and aluminum foil. Though far from elegant, this mod paved the way for pioneers like ASM to develop effective backlighting solutions that made the Game Boy truly portable. Engineers, developers, and artists all over the world continue to invent and design new products to bring new interest to an old console.
While most resources used to circulate on website forums like the 8-Bit Collective and ChipMusic.org, the prevalence of social media platforms has made these discussions significantly more accessible. Today, more and more people are getting involved in DIY DMG modding. With new products constantly arriving on the scene and new tutorials circulating online, it’s never been easier to transform the beloved Game Boy of your youth into a console that reflects your style.
And that’s where Greg Farrell’s book comes in. Game Boy Modding synthesizes useful tutorials with an exploration of the diversity of DMG modding and modders. Greg is one of those people whose engagement in the community creates unbridled enthusiasm for modded consoles. This book is as much about guiding you through the ins and outs of Game Boy modding as it is about inspiring you to take apart your console and figure out how it works.
At the end of the day, Game Boy modding is about expressing one’s creativity. It’s about taking something Nintendo locked behind patents and security screws and making it our own. Whether that’s adding a backlight to illuminate your screen or giving the unit a makeover with a pastel shell and button set is entirely up to personal preference. What we hope is that this project sparks curiosity and invites you to play with your Game Boy—whatever that means to you!
Happy modding,
The RM Team
