“The day of judgement is nigh. The serpent’s tail has summoned the armies to their final battles and soon its venom will fill the skies. Only the dead can save the living now.”
So says Abel Whitcroft, a young boy executed as a male witch in the 17th Century...and the second skeleton that Luke has watched emerging from the mud by a local lake within a matter of days, and at almost exactly the same spot. Taken both together, these bones from the past, now restored to flesh by the magic in the lakeside mud, offer the first real clues as to why and how Andy might have disappeared...but their accounts of the truth are so different that one of them must be lying.
To find out the truth about their missing friend, Luke, Sophie, Ed and Dan - with their super powers now restored - must travel back through the Asgard portal to take part in the battles of Ragnarok and to witness the destruction of that world and all of its gods.
But the evil they helped to unleash through their dream can morph its identity and cross into parallel worlds, and so they’re spared from death at Ragnarok to face a final showdown in the city of Chichen Itza, and in the time of the ancient Mayans.
The city’s shaman is a powerful adversary, and through him the gods decree that Luke and Dan must contest the ancient ball game to prove their trustworthiness...and the team that loses will be put to death as a sacrifice to the gods.
When a storm brings bad omens and tragedy rather than much-needed rains, it leaves the way clear for the evil forces to strike...To defeat that evil and save the city the prophecy that Sophie has cast for the city’s ruler must be fulfilled during the ceremonies to honour the feathered serpent god, Kukulkan, at the autumn equinox.
The concern for Sophie is that her prophecy has nominated her as one of the two girls whose fates will decide the outcome...with the unlucky girl facing sacrifice by ritual decapitation...
