The rain was pouring down. The dirt road through Zululand was incredibly muddy, a surface of slippery black loam. Our friends, Garth and Janet Holden, were driving a large open truck, packed with our furniture covered only by a canvas tarpaulin. At the moment, we were stuck behind a large truck belonging to the Natal Parks Board capture unit, containing a full load of wildebeest. The truck had slithered across the road and was dug into the mud broadside on. We had packed in the rain and driven through the downpour for hours. My wife Barbara and I were on our way to the Umfolozi Game Reserve, where I had been appointed as a game ranger and wilderness trails guide. Eventually we managed to get through and towards dusk arrived at our new home in Masinda, in the Corridor between the Umfolozi and Hluhluwe Game Reserves. The Corridor is part of the combined complex of these two reserves. All our furniture was soaked through, including our mattresses, couches, and chairs, and worse still, we were expecting Barbara’s parents to arrive the next day to stay with us for a week. The year was 1971, and Barbara and I were newly married. It had all started in 1958, when at the age of 28 I met Brian Campbell at Gollel in Swaziland."This is the real story of 'Indiana' Don of Africa. The most humble man I have ever met. He loves God's creation and has given his life to educating people of it's value and care." Andy Huddleston Don Richards. Adventures of an African Ranger (Kindle Locations 114-128). M.E.I. International.
