Synopsis

My Memoir is a story of adventure, isolation, and dedication as a Park Wife living in eight of our unique National Parks: Isle Royale, Crater Lake, Hawaii Volcanoes, Olympic, Sequoia, Lehman Caves (now Great Basin), Chalmette Battlefield (now Jean Lafitte National Historical Park) and Shenandoah. I had the good fortune to have married a Park Ranger and become a Park Wife. We belonged to the three privileged generations that experienced this unique “folk culture,” which began in Yellowstone National Park when a “single” ranger smuggled his wife into his remote back-country cabin—a lifestyle that no longer exists. These are my stories; living at the edge of a volcano, in deep snow, in a rain forest, a high desert, in a cemetery, and often in isolation. A life I could never imagine; not even in my wildest dreams.

À propos de l'auteur

In the year 1928, Phel Karvakko (Jacobsen) was the fifth and last child born to her Finnish-American parents in South Range, a small Finnish community in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. She became a devoted companion to her ranger husband Bob, a loving mother to their two adopted daughters, and a dedicated Park Wife who had the privilege of living in eight of our beautiful National Parks. Her ranger husband grew up as an only child in Wyoming and Nebraska with his Czech-American mother and Danish- American father. At the young age of nine he knew he wanted to become a National Park Ranger. He planned his young life preparing for this goal. Phel has always loved the written word. Living in isolation, she became an avid letter writer. Fortunately, Bob’s mother insisted that she receive a letter once each week; she had the fore-sight to save every one. This dream of a memoir has lived and grown in Phel for sixty-five years. With the help of the letters, the encouragement and insistence of teachers, fellow writers, family and friends, this memoir has become a reality. Phel and Bob live in the Shenandoah Valley on forty-five rural acres with a skyline view of Shenandoah National Park. Phel is an avid organic gardener, cooks and bakes every day (her health cookies are a well-kept and sought-after secret), is a member of the local classics book club, and regularly entertains in her home.
