Synopsis

This book is my soul poured on paper. It begins with a story of my experience dealing with a loved one who suffers from addiction, which defined much of my childhood and who I have grown to become. The sections that follow contain poetry related to abuse, heartbreak, mental illness, love, and sex. These poems describe a most honest recounting of my ongoing struggle with depression, anxiety, and PTSD, as well as my experiences with the trauma of sexual assault and domestic abuse. Many of these poems are difficult to swallow, and may be triggering to some. I chose to include such selections because I believe that I, and so many women and men, carry these burdens in secret. I want to let survivors know that they are not alone. The final section of the book contains poetry that assesses the world around me; subjects like racism, sexism, and the beauty and the horror I’ve witnessed living in America. This is the world as I’ve seen it, as I’ve felt it, as I’ve hidden from it and found the courage to re-enter it. Everyone takes a lonely trip down the rabbit hole sometime, and this is the "humbly cutthroat" story of my journey back out.
