Beautiful young widow, Lady Lavinia Fitzsimmons-Greene, is bored out of her mind. Expected to wait out her mourning period in a castle in the depths of the country, with no one to talk to but her devoted maid, Lizzie, she finds it difficult to occupy her time. But this is to change; while driving on the estate she comes across a young, and very handsome, neighbour who has been thrown from his horse and is lying unconscious at the roadside. She does not realise it, but this is the beginning of a change in her life, for her and Lizzie, and other young neighbours. She is abducted, which leads her to change all her accepted ideas about herself. In addition, she and Lizzie become involved in ‘people smuggling’, émigrés from France escaping as the Terror starts to roar its way across the country, while in London an ex Bow Street Runner is trying to find out who is behind that, a network of highwaymen and a gambling den with ruined young men to its credit. In all this both Lavinia and Lizzie find love and a new direction to their lives.
