Many teachers of adults and teens have concentrated on learning the content of the Bible, but have not learned much about how to teach it. This book of 12 lessons seeks to explore learning theories and teaching methods at a level useful for laypersons. It also compares Pedagogy (teaching children) to Andragogy (teaching adults) in useful ways. This is intended for teachers of Sunday school, or ABF, rather than for professional teachers in general education.

Rev. Bill Smallman expected to be an engineer, not a teacher, not a trainer of teachers. He studied Mechanical Engineering for his B.S.M.E. in 1962 at John Brown University, where he also met his wife Doris. They shared a calling to overseas missionary service. Bill developed an interest in Fluidics early in his brief engineering career, involving control circuitry for machinery using high-pressure air in logic devices. Later he was doing computer programming of engineering calculation procedures, in the late 1960s. He and Doris served with Baptist Mid-Missions in Manaus, Amazonas, Brazil, 1970-1979 for ministries of seminary teaching, church planting and establishing a distance education seminary program. He led the seminary through a process of nationalization to come under Brazilian administration as it continues today. This involved working through the legal and administrative dimensions of education, as well as curriculum development. During two furloughs Bill completed an M.A. in Communications/Cross-Cultural Ministries (Wheaton IL 1980). Coursework included Curriculum Design as a practical wedding of his systems approach to engineering problems and the needs and objectives of training. That led to his being invited into the administration of Baptist Mid-Missions and moving to the Cleveland OH area. Completion of his Doctor of Missiology (D.Miss.) at Trinity International University (Deerfield IL 1985) led to adjunct faculty teaching of graduate courses in several seminaries. His course in National Leadership Development was taught in the USA and to seminary faculty and administrators in the Philippines, timed with a lectureship for seminarians and faculty in Hong Kong. Along with his normal administrative work in the training of new missionary recruits for intercultural ministry, Dr. Smallman developed an online continuing education program for their missionaries in 60 nations around the world. His several books include a series of Bible study books as a resource for teachers of adult or teen classes, including this book.
