Emerging from childhood experiences can often have subtle, sometimes significant effects on our personality. I think of those people who do evil things to others and wonder if their upbringing was a contributing factor. The majority of adults however, are kind people. They become good mothers or fathers, are thoughtful to each other and kind to their kids. The media unfortunately put another spin on it by reporting only the bad news, knowing that ‘good news never made a paper sell’ so we hardly ever hear about the vast majority – the good people out there. My story describes the reaction of certain characters in my book, when confronted with such a dilemma. Here is the first part of this fascinating novel: Chapter 1Thurs, 31st March 2016. In the gloom of an early dawn, a young dog ran excitedly along the seashore, ducking in and out of the gentle surf as it lapped lazily over the sandy beach. It glanced back to check the whereabouts of its master before continuing its frolicking. The dog ran towards a steeper part of the beach that was strewn with rocks and large boulders, when it caught sight of a strange object, causing it to stop in its tracks. The animal looked back again at its master and gave a sharp yelp before gazing once more at the mysterious shape a few metres ahead. “What is it Jen?” called the man as he approached. Moment later, through the murkiness, he saw it; a silhouette of someone sitting in a chair with sea water lapping over their ankles. “Hello!” he called out. There was no answer. “Hello, are you okay?” Still there was nothing; no movement or sound from the solitary figure. The walker moved closer with the dog at his heels. “Hello.” He repeated and, yet again, he was met with silence. The walker, now just a few feet away, looked down at the figure, realising instantly it was a male sitting in a wheel chair. He stepped closer and immediately took in the ghastly details. The horror of it triggered a softly spoken comment, “Oh my God...!” The man’s mouth had been taped over, and his hands and elbows taped securely to the arms of the wheel chair. His waist was tied to the chair with cord and when the walker looked down at the man’s legs he discovered his lower shins had also been heavily taped. He had a fleeting urge to pull away a piece of seaweed lodged inside the man’s collar, but instead, he reached for his mobile phone and tapped out a number.
