In one of my previous books, Teenage Tales of Hungerford, I described what a great place Hungerford was, growing up there during the Swinging Sixties. The purpose of this series of books is not merely to update Hungerford’s history to the present day, but to delve into the five centuries preceding my arrival and to highlight the many changes which have occurred over the years.In this volume, one of the major foundation stones in Hungerford’s history--if not the main one—namely, the Town and Manor is described in detail together with traditions which have been faithfully preserved over centuries.Our journey through Hungerford commences in the lower High Street advancing to the top of town. We then take a diversion around the Priory and over the Common to Hungerford Park. In between, we learn about nicknames, street names and sporting activities. Back on track, the book take us back to the top of the town, and via Church Way and Church Street, to the High Street. Along the way we learn some of the history including people, places, events and buildings which have made Hungerford such an interesting place.
