Alexander's father, Tort has just come out of a care home where someone has tried to murder him. His son, Alexander, tries to strangle him. The Nun Police dressed as soldiers kidnap him for a secret he has been given by the man in the home.Alexander calls in some friends to help him recover his father and the secret that has been stolen from him. The secret is in a Bovril jar and leads them on a quest to a prison/Borstal/doss house and a nunnery, where they uncover a secret plot to murder homeless men and claim their benefits. The scheme is run by men disguised as nuns and a defrocked priest.Alexander and his friend Carl escape after they discover the inmates being given each other to eat. They are forced to join The Sunny People but are rescued by Alexander's friend, Damien Creame and taken to the nunnery where Tort is being held.Disguised as nuns, they find Tort and the secret hidden in a brick in the nunnery. This enables Creame, dressed as a makeshift arch-bishop and calling himself an “arch-bysshop”, to crown Alexander with the title of Ultimate Adjudication Officer (U.A.O.) on a toilet they have built in the nunnery. It goes wrong when a rival group, the John Smith's (J.S.) Men, attack them. They try to crown their own U.A.O. but they find out that he has been crowned in the wrong place. They need to consult the Map, Neili, who is the leader of the Sunny People, to find out where to crown him. A ring used by Cromwell enables the power of the U.A.O. to be usurped. Creame steals it but is chased for it. He gives them a fake and gets his friend Bertie Bivouac to eat it, but Bivouac is murdered by a J.S. man in a gorilla suit and they don't know what has happened to him.Alexander discovers that the nunnery is being run by corrupt officials and that they are all supposed to be on the same side but fighting each other and continually vying with each other for power by making deals.
