Synopsis
In the 1960s, Jo Sweeney, the maintenance engineer in a local textile factory, has an affair with a young widow. The gossip has it that Jo has fathered a child. Jo’s wife leaves him to return to NW Germany which she had left before the outbreak of World War Two, seeking work in N England. Here she met and married Jo. Following their sad domestic split in the early 1960s, their son, Wilhelm, a young haulier, develops his business, working between the UK and N France and NW Germany, where he can keep in touch with his mother. Willi becomes a small-time criminal, holding sway over his associates in a terrace of 6 houses he has bought from the profits of illegal importation of drugs and trafficking illegal immigrants from Eastern Europe. In the 1980s, a Special Operations Force is pursuing the haulier for serious arrestable offences, including murder.In the present day there is a disturbing find when the banking of the local canal subsides after a prolonged period of heavy rain. The workers repairing the banking discover bones that don’t belong to animals. DI Dermond Morrison and his detective colleagues are called in to investigate and have to unravel a mystery going back over 50 years.Will they be able to identify the remains?
