Synopsis

The Apostles' Creed is the most ancient ecumenical creed of the New Testament Church. It has long been used as the shibboleth to distinguish mainline Christian churches from cults. Of course, in this day or moral and religious relativity, the mere acceptance of this creed may not imply the church will be universally accepted as authentic by all parties. Nevertheless, it remains a baseline which conscientious biblical Christians may use with charity to acknowledge individuals across denominational lines as Christians even if their own denomination may not regard the church of the other as being truly Christian due to what may be perceived as serious theological differences. This brief commentary is offered from a Reformed, Protestant perspective in the hope that it may be used to promote genuine unity in the truth that is in the Lord Jesus Christ across church lines by a better appreciation of what we confess together to be biblically true.
