It is the run-up to D-Day 1944. Set among the somewhat spooky, misty lanes of North Staffordshire. Themselves haunted by the sinister spectre of a local fifth column - lies Hatton Green Ordnance plant; the research centre for a revo-lutionary projectile dubbed ‘The Matchless, Patchless Bullet’, brainchild of Prof. James Grant, head of Research. It is hoped the projectile will help turn the tide of the Second World War in favour of the Allies.Among the many workers at Hatton Green are Sid Jones, middle aged and somewhat embittered, trapped as he is in a loveless marriage to Nancy, his long suffering wife of several years. Sid’s bosom pal - Paddy Delaney - part of the Irish diaspora, is footloose, fancy free and up for anything. Both men want to enlist in the British army before war’s end. However, the management at Hatton Green remind them that they are under contract as war workers and must stay put!The Matchless Patchless Bullet exceeds all expectations and attracts the eagle eye of the army’s sharpshooters corps, based in Yorkshire, England. The corps are eager to use the Bullet for a small job of their own. In the North of France, the French Resistance are being slowly and ruthlessly decimated by a much hated Gestapo chief, and want him eliminated. Sergeant Eddie Lomax, a Scotsman and the Corps’s ace sniper is selected for the job; but will the Match-less, Patchless Bullet perform as expected? Then fate intervenes! An earth-shaking explosion disturbs the area around Hat-ton Green. Is it one of Hitler’s long expected V-weapons? Has the plant itself literally exploded - a careless accident perhaps?Having absented themselves for a day at the races, Sid Jones and Paddy Delaney unbeknown to others, escape the conflagration at Hatton Green. Later, lamenting the tragic deaths of so many co-workers and personal friends, both men realise that they are out of work but free - at last- to do as they please. With careful planning and some luck at the races, they realise a new life awaits them both. Not in the army as planned - nor in England, but somewhere abroad...
