This isn't another running book written by a superhuman athlete accomplishing the impossible. Peter Howland, a long time, casual distance runner, shares his narrative of the trials and trails endured by a mature runner. Howland was an avid amateur motocross racer for much of his life and shares a unique perspective on distance running as he winds the sport of motocross into a compelling running narrative. RUNNING AND THE ART OF MOTOCROSS is a man’s story of the pains that accompany a declining body, while still running. The balance of responsibilities to a family and a 60-hour work week, while still running. The back and forth between injury, optimal wellness, and injury again, while still running. This is the story of one man finding his Running Purpose, and sharing that purpose—all while still running. The book's title is a shout out to Robert M. Pirzig's masterpiece ZEN AND THE ART OF MOTORCYCLE MAINTENANCE in turn, Pirzig was playing on Eugen Herrigel's ZEN AND THE ART OF ARCHERY. While not making a direct connection to Zen, Howland was influenced by Pirzig's book. As you can see this book is a little hard to nail down to a specific category. Is it a running book, an explanation of motocross, a guide to injury recovery, or a twist on a self-help book? This one needs to be experienced to be understood.
