On 15 January 2009 an Airbus A320 made an unscheduled landing on the Hudson River in downtown New York City. It was described as the 'Miracle on the Hudson'. The pilot has been recognized as a hero for skipping the plane across the water and saving the lives of 150 passengers and 5 crew members. However the flight controls also played a vital role by providing real-time sensor data to the pilot and responding precisely to his commands. This is the untold story of how those controls were envisioned in 1963 and incorporated into the most modern aircraft at its time of manufacture, the Airbus A320.Fact and faith play a role in our lives. They play an even greater role in the accomplishment of new things, innovations. The innovator uses facts in the same way as the rest of us, however his or her approach to faith is different. Faith, for most of us, aligns with a resistance to change, but to the innovator, faith is not just wanting change but expecting it. In this book we follow the development of a new sensor technology that becomes the basis for a revolutionary improvement in aircraft controls and safety. Facts and faiths are intertwined as this device evolves from an idea in the 1960s to the basis of all aircraft navigation controls today. The story follows the development of this new technology through the career of its inventor and champion, Joe Killpatrick of Honeywell. The story illustrates the positive and negative events typical of new product developments. Just when success seems achieved, another challenge presents itself. Fifteen years of step-by-step development were needed to create the science that led to its initial prototype success. The facts established from this success encouraged Joe to have faith to push the product into mass production. Thirty years later this sensor enables a plane to land safely on a flowing river.
