“A true page-turner…packed with kidnapping, murder, manhunts and conspiracy.” — BlueInk Reviews (starred review)
Bob Fiske — the 74-year-old dinosaur who’s taught Honors English and coached varsity football for five decades — is missing.
To his Winners, class favorites Fiske designated over the years for their potential to “Live Big,” it’s heartbreaking. Fiske did more than inspire with soaring oratory; he supported their ambitions into adulthood. Four of his brightest former stars reunite to find him, putting high-octane careers on hold, slipping police barricades, racing into the wilds of Northern Michigan for clues about the fate of their legendary mentor.
Others don’t see a legend. They see an elitist whose time has passed.
As the search unfolds, churning up feints and betrayal and explosive secrets from the Winners’ own pasts, each must decide how far they’ll go for Fiske. Will the truth affirm him? Or has this cult of hyper-achievement spawned a thing so vile none of their lives will survive intact?

Jeff Bond lives in Michigan with his wife and two daughters. He belongs to the International Thriller Writers association. — At Yale, I told friends I wanted to write a novel. I’d grown up racing through all the Clive Cussler I could find, and college was introducing me to War and Peace and The Corrections, characters so real I felt the author—from centuries ago, thousands of miles away—plucking thoughts straight from my own head. The insights in these denser books dazzled me, but I missed the adrenaline rush of the thrillers I’d read as a boy. Could a story do both? I wanted to try. If it was dumb for a twenty-year-old who’d never written fiction to dream of pulling off such a feat…it got dumber. Yale offered a Fiction Writing Workshop course. I never took it. When friends asked why, I said, “I don’t want someone else teaching me how to write.” Though I'd been half-joking, there was something at the core of this answer I believed. I wanted to work out from scratch how these unicorn books—with their breakneck plots and living, breathing characters—would look. I didn’t want a drop of help. Looking back, I’m amazed they let me out with a diploma. I took a regular job out of school. Soon I started writing novels on the side, giving no thought to genre or who’d read them. I finished a way-too-long manuscript about classmates in their first jobs. A basketball story. An adventure of mismatched heroes rescuing the world from anarchy. They weren’t good yet, but each was an improvement on what’d come before. Meanwhile, life rolled on. I held day jobs as a consultant, business analyst, teacher, and programmer. I lived on both coasts and ended up in the middle. I wrecked an ankle playing too much basketball. I shepherded two daughters into elementary school—a gig that’s made me a soccer coach, gymnastics parent, and winder of ponytails. Through it all, I wrote. I discovered my hypothetical books weren’t unicorns at all. Lonesome Dove, Gone Girl—writers had done it before and would do it again. I studied their examples. It’s taken a few detours, but I believe I’ve finally arrived at the books I imagined writing in school. They are character-based thrillers: too fast and twisty to be “literary,” but with unique premises that don’t fit typical thriller genres. In my stories you’ll find action, big reversals, and heroes you care about. Themes that lurk below the surface include ambition, class, parenting, corporate culture; but—always—a great story comes first.

Can the truth redeem him Or has this cult of hyper-achievement spawned a thing so vile none of their lives will survive intact ----------------------- More from Kirkus Reviews: 'Bond collapses two distinct literary genres into one seamless novelistic whole: a mystery and an emotional drama . Fiske is deliciously enigmatic . Bond is so ingeniously inventive--he consistently moves the story in wholly unpredictable directions . The novel's central mystery is thrilling, but the true spine of the tale is the fragile connections between the past Winners, who must not only investigate Fiske's disappearance, but also the authenticity of their lives and friendships.'.
