Synopsis

After independently escaping from post-revolution Russia, Igor Sazevich’s parents met and then married in San Francisco, several years after Igor was born. That was just the beginning of an unconventional life with eccentric parents. His father became a well-known local sculptor and teacher; his mother designed window displays for the famed City of Paris department store and decor for society parties. Family friends created much of what he saw at the 1939 Golden Gate International Exposition on Treasure Island. No wonder he developed an eye for the city’s art and architecture, and a resistance to following rules. Later, he became an architect and married into a family of royal exiles: His artist wife, Natasha, was the niece of Prince Vasili Romanov, nephew of the last czar of Russia. Frequently through Vasili, Igor worked for a variety of colorful characters, from Napoleonic winery owner Louis Benoist to sports mogul Jack Kent Cooke; from the Youngbloods lead singer Jesse Colin Young to the artist Sam Francis. After living with his parents, who would want conventional clients?
