Good manners, respect for self and others have always mattered to me. Over the years, as I go about my daily business and observe or interact with people I am sometimes appalled by the boorish, disrespectful and overall poor social skills displayed. But now that I am no longer timid about sharing what I know, I am confident this book will be an essential addition to any library or reading list. Millennials, Generations X, Y & Z who may have been raised in households where good manners, respect or good social skills were not taught or emphasized will find it especially useful. The tips are intended to be a gentle reminder or guide not a bible on soft skills/social etiquette. I often use stop lights/traffic signals as an analogy in my training sessions to explain the role of etiquette/soft skills in modern day life. Think of the chaos motorists and pedestrians would experience without the presence of working traffic lights/signals/traffic police. Imagine the road rage road users would experience because nobody wants to wait. The accidents, the bottle neck, just one big mess! On the other hand, picture the order/smooth flow (all things being equal) when motorists adhere to the signals - Let's refresh our memory of the meaning of traffic light colors - Amber means prepare to stop (unless directed otherwise by law enforcement personnel), red means stop, and green means go if it is safe to do so or if otherwise instructed by an authorized or law enforcement personnel. Now think of the tips in this book as the traffic signals for all your social, business and interpersonal interactions. They generally apply and should be observed but there will be occasions when you don't adhere to them depending on the specific situation. The environment, people, culture, event, time and season are all important factors that dictates how we behave. In a dire emergency for example, the primary goal is to save lives, it is hardly likely in such an event that courtesy would be the focus. Instead you are likely to hear very firm directive to "get out!" or "move!" not "please move" or "ladies and gentlemen kindly come this way." I encourage readers not to underestimate the necessity and importance of common sense in the process. The book is intended to help you to "polish up" your manners, social and interpersonal skills. Have some fun while doing it, try the quiz alone or with family and friends!
