The narrator is an Everyman who must daily find his way through the impenetrable, byzantine world he invents. He sits in his cubicle at the Institute struck dumb with dread at the thought of crossing the warren to visit the copy room. He thinks he might be falling in love with the large, preposterous and loud-mouthed woman he would have to walk past. He has no sanctuary save the Victorian fainting couch in the heart of his room, where he escapes the indignities of the Institute and the obscene privacies of his roommates. He loves to lie down on it with a full stomach and think about things.
