Synopsis

The November 2021 edition of Structure, Function, Integration has authors answering the question: “What Is Integration?” Ida P. Rolf, PhD, taught that the human body has an intrinsic organic wholeness, that doing manual interventions and offering movement education can facilitate the body’s organization in gravity. When a body stands, breathes, and moves as an integrated whole, we see the intrinsic grace of lift as well as grounding through the feet around what Rolf termed the ‘Line’. Our authors in this issue each have a unique way of describing this foundational knowledge of Rolfing® Structural Integration. From legacy faculty member Jan H. Sultan discussing the Principles of Intervention, to an inquiry into the ‘random body’, to musings on the ‘Line’, we see many approaches to the discussion of integration. Also in this issue we continue our diversity and inclusion theme by interviewing Marekah Stewart, the first female Black Rolfer®, and by looking at how personal social positioning and cultural competence affect the therapeutic alliance. We also draw your attention to our interview with award-winning choreographer Russell Maliphant, who incorporated studies in Rolfing SI into the body of somatic understanding he works from.
