Synopsis

1940 and Lisbon is the last stop for anyone fleeing the Nazi menace. German and British spies abound and there’s no rooms available in the city. Jews fleeing are willing to sell their gold and jewelry for .20 cents on the dollar. Martim Silva is a wannabe jewelry dealer and is well known to everyone. In this setting, a young Portuguese woman, Izaura, accepts a position with the British consulate. She is a lawyer and speaks perfect English. She becomes friends with another woman at the consulate who confides in her that she is a spy (for harmless information) for the Germans. The former King of England, now Duke of Windsor, comes to Lisbon and the Germans initiate Operation Willi to try and get him to return to Spain who is friendly to the Nazis. This fails and he becomes Governor of the Bahamas.Jack Beevor is a London lawyer who joins the SOE and is sent on his first assignment to lead the intelligence mission at GB’s Lisbon consulate. Izaura begins working for Beevor and assists him in uncovering the fact that Germany owns many of the city’s brothels where they attempt to get information from passing merchant shipmen and others who frequent the places. The country is completely controlled by the prime minister, Dr. Salazar who is quite adroit in running the country. He gives his friend, a former British fighter in WW1, control of the country’s state police force.England and Portugal have a 500-year old treaty to protect each other and Salazar is very careful to control the country’s neutrality.Portugal produces a large amount of wolfram, a vital element in making armor piercing shells and bullets. They sell to both sides but Germany needs the product more than GB. Jack Beevor sees this as one of his biggest problems and plans to blow up a large trainload of wolfram. He wants to blame it on the Communists and must infiltrate their ranks. Izaura’s girlfriend will feed the Germans false information so that the communists will be blamed. All elements come together in an exciting climax to this fascinating tale of intrigue, sex and life in this fascinating city and country.
