Synopsis

“Lessons from my Fathers in Heaven” is based on some of my father’s sermons preached on Earth, taken from God’s Biblical words and instructions. Each lesson has been adapted from outlines into a conversational, modern-day edification discussion. The focus is on Christianity; eternity in heaven or hell.My father, Robert Durrance Irby, was born out-of-wedlock in Bowling Green, Florida in 1921. His father was an Irish immigrant. But Robert never met his dad who was killed in a bus crash before his son was born. My father didn’t have an easy early life. He wasn’t a model child and later became a very foolish man, living a riotous life. He knew no better; he was a product of his surroundings, his peers, those who had abandoned him, and his own lusts, desires and temptations. But he had some kind of come-to-Jesus moment, realizing he was spiritually dead. He found God - the only father he would ever know - and later became a minister. When my dad died at the age of 85, he had been a faithful Christian for more than 55 years. His life story is like so many others in the Bible. It is simply amazing how God chooses his sons and daughters and uses them in His service in His time frame. My father preached thousands of sermons. This book is an adaptation of a collection of my father’s sermon outlines, converted into a narrative format for edification about Christianity, the Bible and God’s words and instructions. One of those lessons was about happiness. He said it seemed the Lord wanted us to experience happiness … but God has something better in mind – Heaven. My father’s three steps toward happiness on Earth were: fill our mind with good thoughts, work hard serving others, and fill our souls with God. He said that included studying and meditating on God’s word, singing praises, praying, and serving others without ceasing.
