Most know Amen to mean “so be it,” “truly” or “let it be.” Although there is some validity to these meanings, they nevertheless explain only a small part of the origins of the word that is second nature to most religious adherents of Judaism, Christianity and Islam. While most believe that the word’s scriptural and historical beginning is Semitic and Judaic, Kwame Osei’s short but powerful study points to another direction. Osei proves through cultural and linguistic evidence that the word Amen, which is sacred to the religious traditions of Judaism, Christianity and Islam, is also prevalent and indigenous to the Akan of Ghana, West Africa and therefore a part of Africa’s ancient religious heritage. Drs. Issa and Faraji provide historical context for Osei's thesis by demonstrating the links between the Akan of Ghana, ancient Egypt and Napatan-Meroitic Kush. The word Amen has become part of a global religious heritage that originated and continues to exist in Africa.
