"The most traumatic event of my life with Jack began when the telephone awakened us shortly after seven o'clock on Sunday morning, October 12, 1958. He scurried to my side of the bed to answer. After a long, horrified, 'Oh, no!' followed by, 'I'll be right there,' he put down the receiver and told me, 'The Temple's been bombed.'

The news spread quickly. President Dwight Eisenhower mentioned it later in the morning at a largely Jewish political rally in New York. From then on, our telephone rang without pause. I couldn't leave it even long enough to get a cup of coffee. Then a call came that was unlike all the others.

'I'm one of them that bombed your church,' the caller said, 'and I'm callin' to tell you there's a bomb under your house and it's lit and you've got five minutes to get out.'

I believed the call was a hoax but couldn't risk being wrong. I called my husband who soon arrived with police and FBI agents. I found myself wondering who hated us enough to have set the bomb..."

Naomi Patz is an author of seven books, including Explaining Reform Judaism, with Rabbi Eugene Borowitz, the Jewish Holiday Treasure Trail (Behrman House), and editor of many books and articles. She has written numerous scripts and parodies, including an adaptation of The Last Cyclist, a dark comedy written in the Jewish concentration camp at Terezín in 1943 by Karel Svenk. She translated from Hebrew (with her husband) The Third Cry, a fantasy play by Yaakov Cahan, and A Word to the Wise, a setting of three Jewish folktales set to music. She has also written many creative services for the Sabbath and Rosh Hashanah, the Jewish New Year, as well as a prayer book and women's haggadah, and has written monographs on the Jewish communities of Dvur Kralove nad Labem and Jihlava in the Czech Republic. She is a graduate of Barnard College and holds masters degrees in English Literature (Old Dominion University) and Jewish education (Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion), which awarded her an honorary doctorate. Her husband Norman was ordained as a rabbi in 1965 by HUC-JIR in New York. They have two daughters, Debby and Aviva, and four granddaughters - Natasha, India, Sadie and Dahlia. They are the joy of their lives.

Judith Blumberg Maslin is the author of Rabbi and Judy, a memoir. Beginning in her teen years she worked as a piano accompanist and Hebrew day school music teacher. After receiving an MA in art history at the University of Chicago in her forties, she became the founding director of the Temple Judea Museum of Keneseth Israel in Elkins Park, Pennsylvania, where she worked until retirement in the mid-1990's. In 1954 she married Rabbi Simeon Maslin, ordained HUC-JIR, Cincinnati, 1957. They have three children, Naomi, David and Eve; ten grandchildren, and two great-grandsons: Daniel and Yitzchak.
