Synopsis

Medieval romance usually means handsome knights, chaste ladies, colorful tournaments, holy crusades, and noble deeds. Such tales usually portray women as helpless bit players in manly dramas. But did medieval women view their world as romance, reality, or something in between? Were medieval women powerless or could they shape their fates as well as those of the men around them?

As a teenager, the Lady Rowena stumbled into the space between romance and reality. Betrothed to the son of her beloved guardian, she wanted more than marrying someone who was almost a brother. Infected by youthful notions of courtly love, she longed for true love in the guise of a perfect knight who would whisk her off to his castle and love her forever. Fantasy took her to the Tournament at Ashby where events dragged her back to reality. A struggle to control her destiny, and those around her, followed.

My apologies to Sir Walter Scott whose 18th century romanticism reinforced the songs of 13th Century troubadours. This spoof on medieval romance shakes up heroes and villains turning them into flawed human beings acting on idealism mixed with emotions, circumstances, and self-interest. There are no heroes. There are no villains. There are only people.
