Psalm 2:1. Why do the nations rage and the peoples plot in vain? It is striking how separated biblical religion is from the superstition of the ancient world. Nowhere does Scripture declare the gods of Greece or Egypt to possess effective power; the Bible claims only that God exercises authority they do not. Incidents of supernatural activity are rare and entire generations passed without miracle or angelic appearance. Pious Israelites did not plead for deliverance from the evil eye or witch’s curse, but from the raging of human enemies—domestic and foreign—believed to be the instruments of evil. Scripture curses the potentate who uses his power to effect false religion and oppression.

Psalm 146:8. The LORD opens the eyes of the blind. The LORD lifts up those who are bowed down. There is a terrible contradiction in nature and history—in life itself. Evil exists and so does good. Blindness afflicts and God heals. Too often we view this inconsistency only from the vantage of our sorrows. While this psalmist does not explain why God allows evil, he does make plain that God permits suffering in context of overcoming it. That is, God delights more in triumph than in avoiding tragedy. We believe the same when we honor the victorious sufferings of Great Britain and Poland (who defeated the Nazi foe) over the unscathed neutrality of countries like Switzerland and Sweden?
