"Mavis' Kitchen: A Southern Cooking Lifestyle": Mavis Powell developed 'A Southern Cooking Lifestyle' as a young bride during World War II. But the seed of that lifestyle was planted growing up as a child in Texas during The Great Depression. Her mother always had large pots of stews bubbling on the stove to share with hungry travelers. Their home became a 'marked house' as the hobos drew symbols to let fellow travelers know if houses along the way would provide food or a place to rest. This is when Mavis’ love of cooking and her passion to serve others took root, and her cooking philosophy of never letting food go to waste became cemented. Spending over a decade in Louisiana when her daughters were young, Mavis thrived and mastered 'The Art of Southern Cooking.' She turned to what she had in the fridge, freezer, or shelf, and leftovers from their big Sunday 'Dinner' (served at noontime) were used all week and transformed into fabulous Southern creations. As the week progressed and variety was needed, each day began having it’s own 'flavor,' so to speak. Predictability settled in and Mavis created a 'Monday Through Sunday Cooking Lifestyle.' When the coronavirus hit in March of 2020 we retreated to our homes, and more cooking took place in our kitchens than had happened in years. Comparisons between The Great Depression and the current crisis connected food and cooking at home as a common theme. Stocking shelves and pantry with basics, freezing meats and broths, and creating meals out of leftovers stored in the fridge, became the order of the day. This has always been the 'Mavis’ Kitchen Philosophy.' We hope "Mavis' Kitchen" assists in helping you navigate your kitchens and turning mere leftovers into fabulous Southern creations!
