They encounter alien survivors of a destructive cosmic event (The Unwinding) and bring them to safety on the newly discovered planet Fortuna. Arriving settlers include the genetically enhanced young albino woman, An-Bai, an assassin agent of the emperor, who falls in love with Luqas. Despite An-Bai's warnings, the adventurous Luqas returns to the capital planet, where he discovers his father is plotting to destroy the time-traveling Watchmen civilization and unravel our universe. Disavowing the empire entirely, Luqas leaves his AI in charge of a space outpost and prepares for war.

The Watchmen ally with Luqas's AI to cement a truce between universes, ending the Unwindings. Luqas starts a new family on Fortuna, but recalls he was happiest when he was wandering the galaxy, while his AI sidekick finds a new calling in helping the Watchmen forge a new future.
