Synopsis

When former teacher and reluctant sleuth Pat Riordan attends a colleague’s funeral, he expects grief—not suspicion. But when the widow presses a cryptic letter into his hand and quietly asks for help, Pat is drawn into a troubling mystery that won’t let go.

Joe was a good man. Thoughtful. Careful. He’d recently launched a university course digging into local cold cases—an unusual move in their quiet college town. Then he took a fall. Went to the hospital. And died.

Now, with nothing more than a few clues—what Pat comes to call the cues—he finds himself peeling back the genteel façade of a town steeped in privilege, secrets, and decades-old disappearances. What he uncovers hints at power, corruption, and quiet ruthlessness hiding in plain sight.

Told with crisp dialogue and a deep understanding of human nature, The Cues is a mystery that honors the traditions of classic storytelling while offering a fresh voice in modern amateur sleuth fiction. No gore. No gimmicks. Just smart, subtle suspense from an author who knows the quiet ways truth can hide—and how determined people can bring it to light.

For readers who enjoy thoughtful mysteries, well-drawn characters, and a slower burn with satisfying depth.

À propos de l?auteur

I grew up across the street from a house where a young girl was murdered. That mystery, still unsolved to this day, drove me to work in the criminal justice system, first as a court investigator and later as a prison counselor. In between those jobs, I worked as a college speech instructor, a freelance writer, a newspaper reporter and a high school teacher. I took time-out to travel overseas, hike the Grand Canyon several times and return to school to earn three master degrees. The young girl's death decades ago also prompted me to become a "paperback writer" of mysteries. As an investigator for 15 years, I heard first-hand stories from men who committed crimes. Later, as a mental health therapist at a prison, I developed a keen ear for hard and realistic dialogue. I have written three mystery thriller novels staring amateur sleuth Pat Riordan. Book 1: "Bricked", Book 2: "The Slip Swing", and Book 3: "The Cues". Now working on my fourth novel, I also hang out a counseling shingle in my hometown of Columbia, Missouri treating persons who struggle with obsessive-compulsive disorder.
