Synopsis

“In the world, you will have tribulation. But take heart; I have overcome the world.”

Jesus did not say
“You might run into some trouble along the way.”
He said you will.

External conflict surrounds us every day here on Earth. However, the more frequent and damaging battles take place inside us. This relentless turmoil produces many unwanted side-effects in our hearts and minds, which reveal themselves in destructive behaviors and suffering in the souls of the afflicted.

Overcome began in 2013 as a support group for individuals as a way to overcome drug addiction and help those struggling to find recovery. It is the first component of a Christ-based recovery program called Strategic Discipleship*. Since then, it has been adopted by ministries and non-profits nationwide as a platform to support and disciple these precious souls, by confronting this devastating force with the weapon of God - His Word.

The personal edition has been built to work with both support groups and people who may be skeptically cautious about attending meetings. In each of the 17 topical chapters, you will find a destructive worldly reaction to these internal wars and a biblical response designed to educate, encourage, and engage. This edition is a great resource for group leaders who may be hunting for group discussion topics. (While this book specifically identifies and addresses substance abuse and addiction through the biblical lens of scripture, it is also a useful tool for dealing with any destructive sin that may be causing a disturbance in your life.)

Also included in this special edition, are many personal and inspirational stories from individuals who have experienced the heartache and soul-ache of addiction. But more importantly, these testimonies tell of redeemed and recovered lives, all possible because of the grace and transformative love of God.

You are meant for more.

"What is Strategic Discipleship?
Strategic Discipleship is a unique approach to address and confront substance abuse and addiction. Far too often programs and support groups place too much importance on recovery instead of a relationship with the Savior. While we believe this trend occurs unintentionally, we must stop and ask ourselves, “Which is the more important issue, sobriety or salvation?”

Our responsibility is to share the Gospel of Jesus Christ in whatever ministry field we find ourselves called to. And, as Matthew 28 points out, we are also called to make disciples. What a beautifully advantageous intersection of purpose and possibility God has provided us with to fulfill that calling in the specific ministry of substance abuse. This opportunity began by observing the deficiency of available resources for individuals and organizations motivated to address the issue of addiction and substance abuse wreaking spiritual havoc on communities nationwide. As a result, in April of 2021, Cabin in the Woods Publishers began to align their company model to focus more on equipping communities to combat substance abuse in a biblically meaningful way.

Our method for equipping ministries, non-profit organizations, churches, and small group leaders with guidance and materials for starting and maintaining Christian faith-based recovery support is outlined through what we call Strategic Discipleship. Made up of four components, our system is designed for each stage to successively build upon the previous ones, with the intent of shifting the identity of the recovering individual from active addiction to godly purpose.
