Police books fall into three categories: Cops are Heroes; Cops are Evil; and I Was an Amazing Police Chief Last Century. The stories are entertaining, but they’re not accurate. Cops are neither heroes nor villains, and retired police chiefs are narcissistic tyrants who remain delusional about their bygone administrative aptitude.
Scumbag is a different type of police book. It is a warning for future cops, a frustration relief valve for current cops, and a peek behind the curtain for non-cops who are curious about what it’s really like to be a cop. As a bonus for befuddled police managers, the book explains why cop leaders rise through the ranks while lacking basic leadership ingredients such as integrity, professional skill, and perceptible compassion.
America has a lot of good police, but that doesn’t mean we do a lot of good policing. Our system rejects good work and strips police of our inherent goodness, a fate shared by most of my criminal clientele. The similarity between cop and criminal should not be a surprise to criminal justice experts. Law enforcement builds a cop the same way a dysfunctional family builds a criminal. Both adhere to the historically popular abuse-and-degrade system of professional development.
Scumbag serves as your literary ride-along through a police career presented in three parts:
Each section explains why cops do what we do, accompanied by an internal dialogue that reveals what many of us are thinking but not allowed to say. If you enjoy life, liberty, truth, and humor with a hint of sarcasm, welcome to the shit show.
