The next decade – this one – on the other hand, began with Al Qaeda. And then, another surprise attack,: Lara became a teen. It ended with sub-prime lending, the collapse of the U.S. economy and Bernie Madoff. So, you can imagine.

Seriously though. Since publishing the first book of Christmas Letters, readers have come to appreciate anew the ancient tradition of the form, which goes back 25,000 years to the cave paintings of Lascaux. Most uninformed people believe those paintings were Christmas Letters. As were the ancient Egyptian hieroglyphics -- just more talk about another royal family. And those signals from outer space? Right! Christmas Letters from a place far, far way. The point is, the tradition of telling stories about the family has been going on for Millennium.
