Synopsis

A twenty-something misfit, Jack Neufield, discovers the holy grail of science – the "Law of Connections" and builds a donut-shaped conveyance in his barn that reverses gravity. Regrettably, in his zeal to test the device, he gets caught at his nurse girlfriend's hospital, stealing Cobalt 60, a powerful isotope. With the authorities in hot pursuit, he still manages a trial run, and it works better than expected – he's propelled from the Earth (maybe repelled is a better word). On the Far-side of the Moon, an entity awaits for just such an event – humankind's discovery of Fourth Level Technology, the base entry requirement to the Continuum, an interstellar commonwealth of advanced beings where non-interference is normally the primary directive. Events are triggered, and the entity rescues Jack, who's close to death. In due course, Jack manages to forestall an alien invasion and then return back to Earth to somehow save his jailed accomplice girlfriend, Janey, only to be imprisoned himself. The authorities want the theory bad and are willing to do bad things to get it, world dominium being a powerful motivator. But Jack can't tell, or else he loses his quasi-probationary status with the Continuum. Besides, no one would believe him anyway. The adventure continues in Book 2 – "The Emergence" (the Earth is ready) and Book 3 – "First Contact" (they finally came).
