Jonathan Knaul spent more than three decades as a Royal Canadian Air Force test pilot, trained to manage extreme risk, uncertainty, and responsibility. Yet nothing in the cockpit prepared him for becoming a caregiver to his parents.
In Final Approach, Knaul tells the intimate story of caring for his father through terminal cancer and his mother through dementia, while balancing family, duty, and emotional resilience. Drawing parallels between aviation decision-making and caregiving realities, he offers readers clarity in moments of confusion, calm in moments of fear, and humanity when systems fall short.
This book is both a memoir and a companion for anyone navigating aging parents, serious illness, or the quiet weight of responsibility.

Jonathan Knaul, PhD, CD, draws on his experience as both a military test pilot and caregiver in this deeply personal memoir. While navigating a demanding 33-year career with the Canadian Armed Forces, Jonathan cared for his mother through her journey with dementia. At age 15, he cared for his father through terminal cancer. Jonathan's unique perspective bridges the worlds of high-stakes aviation and compassionate eldercare. Jonathan's story offers valuable insights for those balancing professional responsibilities with the challenges of caregiving. Retired from the Canadian Armed Forces as of 2019, Jonathan works as a test pilot instructor at the National Test Pilot School in Mojave, California.
