This is the story of a time and a place that changed the world.
The time begins with Hitler's rise to power in 1933. The place is The Intelligence Zone – an area of England north of London - with its heart at Bletchley Park.
The book is ' A brilliant and accessible' exploration of the scientific advances that allowed Britain to survive the Second World War. Those advances – such as the splitting of the atom (in Cambridge, in 1933) and the development of radar and computing – played a key part in the preservation of the free world.
It tells of the dozens of secret sites which were engaged in all forms of intelligence gathering, using spies, reconnaissance planes, radar, and listening bases which captured messages from the German Enigma machine. It tells how Bletchley Park and MI6 used that secret information to guide military and political leaders, spies and saboteurs, and send fleets and armies to war.
A book written with insight, pace and wit. Here are many tales of discovery, espionage and sometimes terror, often in the words of the actors themselves.
And it tells of a great leader, Winston Churchill, moulder of history and the voice and saviour of the west. Here Churchill – whose mother was American - forged with Roosevelt the grand transatlantic alliance which brought the western powers together to preserve democracy from the evil of racist totalitarian regimes.
“Customers find it 'fascinating and entertaining'” (Amazon) and “a thoroughly good history of the lead up to WWII and the first three years of the conflict.”
'Prepare to be enlightened and moved' (Goodreads review).
(The sequel, A New World After Pearl, continues the story after the Japanese attack on America at Pearl Harbour in 1941- and is equally popular)
