Why is it that so many major projects and business transformations fail? Viewed against the three primary metrics of time, cost and quality of deliverables, such projects often complete late, cost a lot more than budgeted, or fail to deliver the expected benefits. This book explains how to achieve success through the use of three critical frameworks. Firstly, the frame of reference is about addressing a business problem holistically: the parts are intrinsically connected to the whole. Business problems – and transformations – rarely sit neatly within a single part of the business, under the control of a single executive. Businesses are highly interconnected and so, to get the best result, opportunities for change must be addressed holistically. Secondly, the frame of mind is about the leaders’ approach to others, most especially their team members, which should be heavily biased towards coaching and mentoring. Finally. the frame for change is about building the team and guiding it with conviction through a recognised process. This process has three steps – See, Think and Lead – which enable transformation by: seeing things as they really are; thinking through and designing what you want the future to look like; leading the specific transformation to a successful conclusion.

This book is not a wide academic investigation of approaches and techniques – instead it describes the path to success through a story, one that brings to life and makes accessable a small set of tools that deliver a big impact, within the context of the three frameworks.

Part 1 of the book centres on Reed ElectroSense, a fictitious company with a large transformation programme ahead of it. Through this story we will explore the three frameworks, and the related elements, that ensure a successful outcome to a very complex project. Part 2 is a discussion of how to assess the characteristics associated with these three frameworks, concluding with a simple scorecard for your use. Part 3 outlines the tools and techniques referenced throughout the story, providing some structure and guidance in ways to apply them. This part of the book forms a useful source of reference that can be dipped into at any time.
