BOOKTRUST REVIEW
In this delightful, rhyming picture book, we are introduced to one very upset crocodile who wishes that she could be anything but herself.
Crocodile wanders alone and admires a host of jungle animals from afar. There’s a glorious parrot, an elegant giraffe, a majestic lion and a swanky snake. None of these animals are very crocodile-like but - in Crocodile’s eyes at least – all are far more beautiful and impressive than her. Who wants to be a crocodile with crooked teeth and beady eyes when you could be one of these magnificent creatures?
But just as Crocodile starts to feel at her most downhearted, she meets a blind monkey whose wise words and positive perspective reveal that things aren’t always as first meet the eye. With the help of friends and a little bit of sharing, can Crocodile learn to accept herself for exactly who she is?
Themes of negative self-image and low self-esteem are handled in a gentle and sensitive way that champions the importance of sharing our feelings. These themes are especially relevant and useful for young children growing up today in an age of social media and the impact that social comparison can have on self-image. A lovely book to share with little ones in celebration of the things which make us unique, as well as the many things we have in common!

Alex is a mum of 3 to Gus, 5 and twins Teddy and Lola, 3.------------ Alex worked with children for several years in her late teens/early 20's, which fed her imagination and led her to write her first children's book: Ant and Feather (not published.... YET!). Whilst sitting by the pool, at her parent's home in Spain, she watched an ant carrying a feather. The next thing she knew, she was at a computer typing away. When she returned, sometime later, she read the story to her parents. Although a little surprised by Alex's latest venture (there's been a few!), they were really quite impressed.-------------- At the age of 22, Alex moved to Peckham to carry out her childhood dream of becoming a London Firefighter. When she wasn't running into burning buildings (or rescuing cats from trees), she would be sat at a desk, writing weird and wonderful children's stories (she never did quite fit in at the station!).------------- After 5 years, Alex decided to leave the fire service and became an estate agent (suddenly people became less interested in discussing her line of work). This is where she met her husband, Bob. They had their first child Gus, moved back to Alex's hometown of Tunbridge Wells and 22 months later they saw the arrival of twins Teddy and Lola (3 under 2). --------- Not one for an easy life, Alex set up a property company. This gives her the freedom to stay at home with the kids and also pursue her writing career.---------- Alex recently got back in contact with an old friend of hers, Hannah. Impressed by Hannah's work, Alex asked her to illustrate one of her books: Why, oh why, am I a crocodile?. She's loved working with Hannah and loves what they have created. Hopefully this is the first of many, many more... watch this space!
