Synopsis

In October 1919, Irish man, William Gerald Forbes Scott set off for South Russia with the British Military Mission. Attached to the RAF, Scott assisted with the evacuation of the last of the fleeing White Russians as well as the destruction of British military materiél. He was on the last train out of Taganrog before it fell and, three months later he was on the last troop ship out of Novorossiysk as the Red Army cavalry rode into that town. After his return to Ireland and involvement in another Civil War closer to home, he wrote a short account of his Russian sojourn.

A century later, his granddaughter, catching glimpses of something else between the terse, faded lines, set out to bring colour to his voyage through this universally turbulent time. Illustrating his account with her own images, she fleshes it out by exploring the cultural and historical context of his journey, all the while considering the impact of historical events and the effects that such events might have on the individual, the family and their descendants.
