Part of Pier 9's "Lost and Found in History" series, "First Encounters" is a book of first contact moments drawn from over 500 years of human exploration, adventure and discovery. Divided into sections such as 'Fabled Encounters in the Old World', 'The Great Southern Ocean', 'Fateful Encounters in the Heart of Africa', and 'First Contact in the Twentieth Century', this is a book filled with historical moments that have become the stuff of controversy, myth and legend. When Montezuma first heard reports of the Spanish on the coast of Mexico, he thought that the dead had come back to life and were returning to haunt his empire. The nineteenth-century Scottish explorer Mungo Park confronted amazed African tribes on his way to the mouth of the Niger River - they had assumed themselves the centre of the universe, 'the first and only' people of the earth. Some of the most powerful moments in history occur when two people, two cultures, previously unknown to each other, come together for the first time.
