Synopsis

Lionel Noble transports readers to the post-World War II narrow-gauge steam era of the South Australian Railways between Peterborough and Cockburn. With little support on the frontier, workers relied on patience, perseverance, initiative and ingenuity to keep trains running. Lionel's recollections lay bare the harsh, perilous conditions and testing extremes of weather that isolated crews endured. These men forged unbreakable bonds, watched each other's backs and carved out moments of fun amid hardship.
What stands out most is the crew's fierce pride and passion. It was their unity-and the demands of the Cockburn Line-that brought out their best.
