Barbara wrote her memoir, her first book, during the COVID lockdowns when she was seventy-six. It marked the beginning of something deeply meaningful for her. Since then, she has published four more books and ghostwritten another for an elderly man who cannot read or write. As a child, Barbara travelled widely with her RAF family, and that early sense of movement, change, wonder, and curiosity has stayed with her throughout her life. She once imagined becoming a travel writer, but instead she discovered something even closer to her heart: a creative imagination and a love of writing in many different forms. She feels she still has stories to tell and believes many older people do too. That is why she volunteers her time to help them write their life stories, because every life holds something precious and deserves to be remembered. For balance and quiet pleasure, she also enjoys teaching and playing Mahjong.Barbara now lives on the Mornington Peninsula in Victoria, Australia, after spending a nomadic year searching for a place that truly felt like home. That journey, with all its uncertainty and hope, has deeply shaped her latest book and led her to a peaceful, settled chapter of her life.

Paperback. Etat : new. Paperback. Barbara has lived long, travelled far, and already laid bare the story of her earlier life in an autobiography. But in her late seventies, with eighty looming on the horizon, she refuses to fade quietly into the background. Knowing with fierce certainty that she does not want to die in the apartment at the foot of the Dandenongs, she sells it, packs her car, and sets out in search of the place where her spirit can finally come to rest-her own hard-won nirvana. What begins as a journey becomes an act of defiance, a fearless leap into the most exhilarating and transformative chapter of her life. Yet the road is not welcoming: she faces resistance, doubt, and the blunt disbelief of family who question whether a woman her age can survive the harsh freedom of living as a homeless old woman. With honesty, insight, humour, and a blade of satire, Barbara strips away every comforting illusion about ageing and tells, without apology, what it truly feels like to grow old. She recounts the journeys, encounters, and ordeals that test her body, challenge her heart, and demand that she keep choosing herself again and again in her becoming years-the years in which she fights to become, at last, her most absolute and authentic self.Alone and largely unsupported, she drives herself forward by sheer will. That self-determination leads her, not to defeat, but to a place of deep peace, fierce acceptance, and hard-won contentment. And even there, she is not finished: with eighty approaching, she is already preparing for her next overseas journey, proving that the hunger to live fully does not diminish with age-it burns brighter. In her late 70s, Barbara sells everything, packs her car, and sets off alone in search of a place where she truly belongs. She discovers that growing older isn't about fading away-it's about becoming the person she was always meant to be. This item is printed on demand.
