How do you hold on to the person you love when illness threatens to become the whole story?
In We Share One Soul, Peter Griffiths remembers his wife, Mandy, through the life they shared: family, friendship, hockey, dogs, ordinary pleasures and a love that changed him. Her kindness and determination emerge in the everyday moments that made her unmistakably herself.
Alongside those memories, Peter writes candidly about six years of cancer, the responsibilities of caring, the uncertainty of treatment and the decision to honour Mandy’s wishes at the end of her life. He also explores the grief and guilt that follow when someone who gave your life meaning is no longer beside you.
Written from a husband’s perspective, this personal memoir offers recognition to readers living with loss, supporting a loved one through serious illness or trying to understand the experience of caregiving. It makes room for laughter, love and continuing connection alongside the hardest parts of saying goodbye.
Contains discussion of terminal illness, voluntary assisted dying, alcohol dependence and mental health.

Peter Griffiths is a public servant, writer and former small business owner from Bathurst, New South Wales. His life and work have been shaped by service, resilience and a belief that people are more than the hardest chapters of their lives. He studied law, politics and sociology at university and holds diplomas in Alcohol and Other Drugs and Mental Health. His NSW Government career has required judgement, compassion and an understanding of people facing complex circumstances. Lived experience of alcoholism, homelessness and mental illness also taught him how easily visible behaviour can conceal a deeper struggle. When Peter met Mandy in 2016, he had largely lost trust in people and in his future. Mandy did not try to rescue or remake him. Through honesty, consistency and unconditional love, she helped him recognise his worth. Peter describes it simply: Mandy did not rescue him, but she saved his life. They married on 13 April 2019 and built a Bathurst life centred on family, their dogs, sport, food and ordinary routines. Their creative partnership included the short-lived Petes Catering, which closed as Mandy's diagnosis and COVID restrictions changed what was possible. After Mandy was diagnosed with bowel cancer in June 2020, Peter became her primary carer through six years of surgery, chemotherapy, hospital admissions and terminal illness. In September 2025, aware their time might be limited, they renewed their vows at home. It was not a farewell, but a celebration of promises cancer had tested and never weakened. Following Mandy's death on 16 June 2026, Peter began We Share One Soul to ensure she would never be defined solely by164cancer. What began as an account of love, illness and loss evolved into a portrait of Mandy's childhood, hockey, career, relationships and continuing influence, strengthened by contributions from people who knew her. Peter writes candidly about caregiving, voluntary assisted dying, self-advocacy, survivor guilt and life after profound loss-not as a medical authority, but as a husband sharing what he witnessed and learned. He hopes Mandy's story encourages readers to listen to their bodies, speak openly to the people they love and recognise the lasting power of everyday kindness. Peter continues to live in Bathurst, close to the family, friends and community who loved Mandy. We Share One Soul is his first book, his tribute to his wife and his promise to carry her name, values and love forward.
