Job experiences the grief that naturally results from his loss. He mourns. He seeks God, his sovereign Lord, who brought this calamity into his life.

Job believes that God loves and defines him, according to divine purpose and desire. As he reaches out with unvarnished honesty, he disentangles emotions, hindrances, and contradictions.

Along the way, he finds healing and once again embraces life.

James, the brother of Jesus Christ, reflects on Job’s example with these words: “You have heard of the perseverance of Job, and have seen the Lord in the outcome, and how the Lord is full of compassion and mercy.”

Brian Smith is a retired Canadian engineer who grew up in Toronto and now lives in Slave Lake, Alberta.

In his career, he managed teams of people involved in projects and the operation of manufacturing plants. Mid-career he took 12 years to travel, read, and crew on sailboats between various ports throughout the world.

Throughout the years, he had the privilege of working alongside people in a great variety of situations: from construction sites to management offices and from churches to off-shore sailboats.

In this, his first book, Smith draws from his life experience of work, play, and a consistent exposure to prayer and the Bible, through both good and bad times.
