Synopsis
The Argonautica is an epic Greek poem chronicling the myth of Jason and the Argonauts on their voyage to retrieve the Golden Fleece. Jason and the heroes must travel through the Hellespont across the Black Sea to the distant eastern shore and the land of Colchis. Returning the Gold Fleece to Greece will not be as easy as it sounds when many hardships and mythical forces are conspiring to see the heroes fail.Written in the 3rd century BC at the height of Greek culture, Apollonius had access to the wealth of geographic, cultural, ethnographic knowledge that had been amassed at the great Library of Alexandria. The Argonautica had a profound impact on later Latin poets like Virgil, Catullus and Ovid.
