It is August 1949, and Louis Steele and his friend, Barry Stark are returning home to Canada from their 15-month tour of duty in the Israeli War of Independence aboard the Empress of Scotland. On board the ship, they spend eight days in the company of the delightful, 19-year-old Paula Field, and her parents, Henry and Edna, who, thanks to Louis and Barry’s constant attention to their daughter, have enjoyed a second honeymoon. The newfound friends part ways in Quebec City, where the Fields make their way to their home in Chicago, and Louis and Barry take the train to Toronto where their families await them. Although everyone is returning to their everyday lives, they all know that the experiences that brought them to the Empress of Scotland have altered them forever. As Louis, Barry, and Paula search for purpose and direction in their young lives, their parents seek to guide them with traditional Jewish family values, life lessons from the past, and an open mind to the future, with everyone wondering where will life take Louis, Barry and Paula, and who will get the girl?
