Synopsis

Churches have been struggling, shrinking, and closing for decades all across the western world. As our culture becomes more diverse, more secular, and more global, Christianity is being pushed into the margins. Many people view the church as an archaic anachronism; some see it as a blight. Pressures are mounting both from within and without to change our tactics, shift our focus, and revise our values and beliefs. What is a hurting church to do in these trying times? There is only one answer: the church needs to be the church. Through a study of several key passages in the Book of Acts, we will see the marks of Christ’s church past and present. We will discover the four essential pillars that provide the structural integrity for this spiritual temple that our Lord is building. These pillars give the church its vital strength and keep the doorway open wide for newcomers to enter in.

This is the second edition of Four Pillars, updated and published October 2025.

“Christians concerned with the declining state of evangelical Christianity will find this book both challenging and encouraging. Though the problems are deeply-rooted and very real, there is an answer, a sure solution. It is found in returning to God’s plan for the church – in returning to the four pillars God intended the church to rest upon... And before you say to yourself, ‘I know this stuff already’, let me encourage you to read the book. You may find yourself thinking about these four truths in new and fresh ways.” - David S. Daniels, Baptist Pastor.

“Astute observation of the Book of Acts leads to the realization that its author, Luke, has punctuated his history of the apostolic church with a number of summary statements, the first of which is probably Acts 2:42. Here the essence of how the earliest Christian believers in Jerusalem ‘did church’ is enshrined for all time. Not surprisingly, in the history of Christianity this verse has often been seen as a model of church life, the earliest of which might well be Basil of Caesarea’s employment of the text, along with Acts 4:32, as a fundamental directive of life together in the monastic sodality. This slim book on the quaternity of ecclesial characteristics is thus very welcome — partly because I love a book I can digest in a few hours! — but especially because it is a helpful delineation of critical aspects of life together as Christians that we ever need to keep in view.” - Michael A.G. Haykin, Professor of Church History, Southern Baptist Theological Seminary.
