Synopsis

This is the story of the great Gaelic hero Fionn MacCool and why he sucks his thumb. It is also the story of the Salmon of Wisdom on the Gaelic flag of Nova Scotia. This traditional tale is retold in English as a participation story, combining gestures and action words to introduce children to the Gaelic storytelling tradition of Nova Scotia, Scotland, and Ireland. This is the revised second edition, with all-new black-and-white illustrations and an extra version of the tale in the Scottish Gaelic language included at the end.

À propos des auteurs

Terri M. Roberts is a Canadian of Scottish and Welsh ancestry who lives in Halifax, Nova Scotia. She is a former high school English literature and drama teacher with a B.A. in English Literature and Women's Studies and a B.Ed. in Secondary Education. Terri has over twenty years of experience as a Girl Guide leader, focusing on the delivery of arts programming for all age groups. She specializes in using stories as a teaching tool.

Kyla Williams is a Halifax-based artist who received her training in illustration and graphic design from Holland College in Prince Edward Island. She has created logos and business cards, hand-painted signage, illustrations for greeting cards and commissioned art pieces. One of her favourite creations was a stamp cancel for Canada Post which is now in postal collections around the world.

Etta has been working as a designer and illustrator for 35 years. Through her work with museums, she rediscovered her own Gaelic roots. Named after her Gaelic-speaking grandmother, Etta carries on her storytelling tradition through illustration. Today she enjoys every opportunity to create designs and images that tell the stories of Nova Scotia Gaels to a new generation.
