Synopsis
This book is split into two blocks of study, Introduction to the Senses and The Nervous System. Most of us take our senses for granted. It is only when we damage or lose the use of one or more that we realise how much we depend on them and how much we miss them in our everyday lives. Part one of this book: Introduction to the Senses, concentrates on observations and experiences that raise questions about how the senses work. Part two of this book: The Nervous System, provides an introduction to neuroscience, and one particular functional role of the nervous system: the way it receives signals from the sensory receptors and the processing of this information as it travels via nerves to the brain. . It introduces the technique of functional imaging, now an essential tool for examining brain activity related to each of the senses.
